Maybe because the conclusions were made by people who never actually sailed on the boats. They may have been with the Coast Guard or some other maritime activity but not on the boats of the Great Lakes.

Why the fascination with the Edmond Fitzgerald?

Why is it that with the hundreds, maybe thousands ,of shipwrecks on the great lakes the wreck of the Fitz continues to be such a fascination to people?
There must have been other wrecks with greater loss of life, others where the reason for the accident was mysterious and and so on.
What makes the wreck of the Fitz overshadow all others?
