That sounds like it was a pretty good deal for all concerned. T'is a shame that someone could not do that now.Randy S wrote:I remember the "good ol' days" when the fence was about 4 feet high with a stand of bleachers behind it (looking from the boat to shore). A crewmate I once had would spend a few hours before each lock visit, putting a handful of whatever we were carrying into "penny candy" paper bags. He would write the name of the boat, the date and what was in the bag on each one. He sold them to the viewers for $1 each as souveniers. Yup, folks would pay a buck for a handfull of rocks, coal or taconite. He would also throw peanuts into the crowd. Invariably, someone would ask why he was tossing peanuts at them. He would simply state - "Well, Y'all are the ones behind the fence." Never failed to get a laugh out of everyone.

Re: Soo fences
The fence like is along Portage is stacked up down by the warehouse near the RR bridge. Been there for since they did the other.
Re: Soo fences
With the current fencing, at least you can shove your camera through. ... There is wrought iron fence along Portage Avenue that's not camera friendly. Perhaps this is what they plan to use?

Soo fences
I saw in todays news that new fences will be installed on the Soo observation deck. I hope these are not the type that were installed at Lock 3 on the Welland Canal. They were 7 foot tall black wrought iron which really hinders your view. If so then another populuar boat watching will bite the dust.
