CSL Tadoussac getting assistance Tuesday morning. Nloading at the Holcim dock must have finished overnight Monday- Tuesday.
On AIS Tuesday morning I see the tug Ecosse has been called in to help Tadoussac off the dock as the NW winds continue to whip across L Ontario.
Windy New Year
Re: Windy New Year
In response to Bookworm...I noticed your comment about course routing of downbounds on Superior these last several days of windings out there.
I saw that too. I thought it was a departure from the open water route across. It also made me remember the night of November 10 1975 when the Edmund Fitzgerald was up there off the Canadian shoreline in much worse conditions;then made the swing SE past Caribou Island and met her tragic end.

Re: Windy New Year
Tadoussac finally made the dock at Clarkson. She was at anchor about a mile off the cement plant pier for almost 5 days due to consistent moderate gale to gale force NW winds into L Ontario. She probably brought in 18- 20 000 tons of limestone from Picton area for the plant’s winter stockpile. If we don’t get a freeze-up;I wonder if she will keep running. That would be pretty cool!
Re: Windy New Year
UPDATE 1 p.m. : Marine Traffic weather shows high winds (represented by a range of colorful barbs) on all of the Great Lakes. Ships that are moving on Superior are taking the "Northern Route"and many are anchored/sheltered, from DeTour to Whitefish Point. The same is true on the other lakes. The locks close on the 15th. and some ships currently anchored on Lake Erie are showing a return destination port on Lake Superior.
Re: Windy New Year
Lee A Tregurtha, on a return trip to Duluth, arrived at the Detroit fuel dock last night, around 10 p.m. This morning (8:30) she's anchored in the Detroit River.
Windy New Year
The winds have been howling up here on the Lake Ontario north shore west of Toronto. Primarily they’ve been all over the north and northwest sector of the compass card.
This has my attention and some of you who follow the AIS maps daily may have noticed that CSL Tadoussac has now been on the hook loaded in Lake Ontario for what will soon be 72 hours.
At Clarkson are 2 piers. One for the Suncor lube product plant; the other for the cement plant. The Tadoussac does a limestone run for the cement plant (used to be Holcim. Not sure who runs it now). The cement plant is trying to build a winter stock pile. Tadoussac has been making twice weekly trips from the quarry near Picton ON to Clarkson all Fall. Both docks are wide open to wind and waves. This past month they’ve had both. This is the second successive trip where Tadoussac has had to anchor offshore. Marine weather sites have shown moderate gale to just shy of full on gale force winds N, NW, and NNW.
L Superior has always been my go-to weather comparison site when things are looking rough. About 1.5 -2 weeks ago they had a blow (last few nights halve been wild too) with all kinds of vessels ( 12 or so )stopped just outside the Soo...
