Obviously this isn't a fair comparison in scope and size, but laying up even a pleasure boat takes some time and a thorough checklist to make certain you do not forget anything. Sea strainers, check valves, water systems, waste systems, batteries, engines, generators, etc. With watch crews and keepers onboard, are any systems typically kept live during layup in limited fashions? Water/waste, heat, etc.

Deck dept 1-3 days, usually 2. Engine Room 5-10 days, depending on winter work planned. Steamers Deck dept 1-3 days. Engine Room 10-15 days

That's what I remember from my sailing days on the lakes (20 years ago). I think the Middletown layup was 18 or 19 days. Columbia Star was 8 or 9 days.

It takes the deck crew just a day or two to have the vessel laid up before they leave. For engine crew it depends on steamer vs diesel and what work is planned. On a steamer it also takes a couple of days to wind things down and idle the plant.

The deck department usually leaves in a day or 2, engineers/conveyorman, galley maybe 5 to 7 days later.

Just a quick couple of question regarding layup. Once at the layup dock how long does it take to get the vessel ready for the winter? Does the crew stay onboard until everything is shut down or do they stagger their departure? Thanks.
