No, Goderich has not had grain barges since 2005 when the Willowglen and Teakglen were sold. It just tends to be a popular layup spot for older ships. The Algorail and Algoway were also retired there.

The Dool was going to be retired at the end of 2024 anyway, the grounding was likely just the icing on the cake. It is a bit surprising that she hasn’t been sold for scrap yet, though.

I always wondered if the Dool wasn't slated for use a grain storage barge at Goderich and that is why it went there to layup. But then again, I believe the Canadian Transfer also wound up in Goderich when it was retired and was later towed away for scrapping. Does Goderich even have any storage barges anymore?

The Tm S. Dool indeed was damaged a few years ago after she ran aground in the Seaway someplace as I can’t recall exactly the location that she ran aground in. She has been in Goderich laid up now for a few years and there doesn’t appear to be any plans in the future to repair her so, she is most likely finished and now is simply waiting on a scrap tow to someplace.

She and (I think) the Ojibway had the same route for a bunch of years under Lower Lakes, it must be part of the contract that the ship returns empty to maximize how many loads they can run in a season.

I dont think there is anywhere else other than Hamilton on the Canadian side that can still handle a gearless bulker carrying ore. Same for the US as well.

Why would algoma central charter the spruceglen when they have the Tim s. Dool laid up in goderich? Or is dool damaged?

Yes, it appears Kam may be on the same trade route, and Spruceglen may be under charter also from CSL.
Spruceglen is on her 2nd trip T.Bay to Sorel.

Looks to me like she's still dedicated to her previous ownership contract. TB to Sorel and up light. Only so many loads in a season to get that tonnage to the customer. And then to consider having to deal with weather, locking, mechanical issues. Time is money.

Bridge Cranes still remain in Hamilton and they still unload gearless bulkers like the ones from the Equinox Class. The Algoma Equinox, Harvester along with G3 Marquis, Algoma Strongfield and Captain Henry Jackman all are not self unloaders and each use the bridge cranes at Hamilton when they are unloading ore cargoes there. As of April 23rd, I believe her AIS read “Thunder Bay” as her next destination from the Marine Traffic’s website and AIS.

Shes left sorel and is up bound, more than likely for thunder bay but possibly richardsons in hamilton.
