It was probably the remains of the boiler of the Silver Spray, located between 4700 and 4800 south, which are still there. She grounded on Morgan's Shoal 15 July 1914 while attempting to land to take University of Chicago students to a tour of United States Steel's Gary Works, and broke up at that spot the next day.

My father said he used to swim down to a shallow wreck and go into the boiler with his buddies back in the 30's or 40's.
My dad swam off the rocks around 40th street at Lake Shore Drive. I was fascinated by his tale as a kid.
Driving down Chicago's Lakeshore Drive, you can now see a part of a submerged object a few hundred yards offshore around 40th street.
My local marine chart shows a shipwreck there.
Any idea of what it was?
I understand that it was the practice, many years ago, to run tugs aground and strip them when they reached their useful life. They were then left for the seas to reduce them.
