Yeah I guess in the early to mid 80's her winter caretakers weren't taking much care of her and failed to notice some of her sea chests on the Port side were had either rusted through or had been forced into an open position by ice. When the morning crew came in she was in the process of rolling over, saved only by her hull touching bottom.
Pumping out the water only solved some of the problem so concrete ballast was added to several compartments on her Stbd side to right her. I'm told there are compartments along her Stbd side which are filled to the hatches with concrete.
As for the mold, well I'm only guessing at that from what I've seen in some of the outer rooms. Who knows what her deep-interiors look like.
Oh, and I guess one of the areas up for restoration when the Cruiser Assn returns is the lower missile mag area, so that may be part of the tour soon enough!

Rolled over from a 45 degree list? Mold? Concrete? Wow, what's the story on that?

During the regular season the answer is usually no, or so I've been told. Reasons range from the areas being dangerous/unlit/filled with asbestos/mold to "the USN says the areas are off limits" to the fact that entire areas in the lower Stbd side are filled with concrete which was added after she rolled nearly to 45* angle during a winter in the 80's.
The truth probably lies somewhere in between. However, I guess in May the Cruiser Sailors Assn is due to return to the Little Rock for a weekend of stay-aboard overhaul for Cruiser Vets. Apparently during that weekend the Entire ship is open for a few people to have a look at with a guide.

Can a tour be arranged to see some of the areas such as the Lower Missile Warhead magazine, the CIC, or the engine rooms on the Little rock?

Buffalo Naval Park to ReOpen 12/26-1/5
Buffalo Naval & Military Park announced the other day that it will have a special re-opening this month for the visiting World Junior Hockey Championship.
The park is usually closed from December through March, so this is pretty out of the ordinary. Being a volunteer restorationist and docent at the park, I encourage anybody in the area to stop on by and have a look around at the museum ships USS Little Rock (CLG-4), USS The Sullivans (DD-537) & USS Croaker (SSK-246) and also the great landside attractions and museum.
Further info and details can be found on the park website:

Every visitor counts - Erie County just slashed the park's funding so it needs public support more than ever!
See you there!
