As I always understood it, a Growler* is a large section of ice that is mostly submerged except for a small part above or at the waterline. The bulbous bow is designed to initially break the water's resistance when a ship is underway. This takes less horsepower to move the vessel at service speed and saves fuel.

* As micro-brewery afficionado's know, a "Growler" is also a 1 gallon glass jug in which you can take your favorite libation home!

The bulbous part of the bow was crushed in eight feet. The new one is under construction, and whole project was expected at two weeks last I heard.

She encountered a growler at the entrance of Belle-Isle Strait of her way from Europe and suffered a broken nose.
