This is Great news,I've often wondered why GLF has not made any effort into repowering,I was concerned they would run them till the EPA drew a line in the sand and all of there Steamers would go to scrap at one time! mn brett

The scheduled repowering of the Munson during next season is fortunate for the Arthur Anderson as, according to a reliable source, she is likely going to take over the Munsons work for the 2016 season.

When i was photographing her earlier this month, there was alot of activity on her. Most of the work was being done in the holds.

I heard that the munson will not sail early but will go into the drydock at fraser this spring and will sail later in the season. I heard about June. still only rumor but i do know that some work that was ongoing was delayed due to the fact it wasnt going to fit out early.

Does anyone know if the John G. Munson will fit-out? Did hear a
goodly amount of steel is needed to be replaced prior to sailing.

GLF, Algoma, and CSL hulls delivered a bit more than 100 of @ 170 ore floats to Toledo Torco in 2012. 95% of these hulls left the Toledo port empty/deadhead. I am thinking that GLF isn’t losing much and Algoma/CSL isn’t gaining much because of the deadhead cost from Torco. GLF had @ 44 ore floats in 2012 to Toledo on the Great Republic, Anderson, Callaway, Clarke, and the Munson. One GLF ship may have to go the wall for a time in 2013 because of the loss of the Toledo ore contract. Which ship is a ? GLF will be looked for in Toledo this shipping season for stone & coke to the Midwest dock.

And Chris M. just posted this over in the "U.S. Fleet" thread:
Chris M wrote:I can confirm shes having work done. I was at the port terminal taking photos of her and there was a ton of activity on her. I could see people on deck, the crane next to her was lowering equipment into the holds. I could hear grinders and welders going.

CSL gets the Toledo ore. They've been carrying a heavy amount of ore to Toledo for nearly a decade anyhow, and soon will ship all the ore in there. The ore shipped to Toledo goes to the former Armco mill in Middletown, Ohio.

They were lifting something big into or out of the Munson this afternoon.

What is the relationshiup between this Tolede ore and 'the seaway'?
It appears that GLF has been hauling some taconite pellets from Marquette to Toledo in recent seasons. The "seaway" statement is saying that whatever steel mill which receives ore through Toledo has switched its source of taconite pellets from the mine that loads out of Marquette to one of the mines in Quebec that loads out of ports like Port Cartier, Pointe Noire, and Sept-Isles. Given GLF's ownership of only one Seaway-sized ship and possibly no ships capable of sailing far out enough in the Gulf to get to the ore ports, the aforementioned switch in sourcing would mean that GLF would lose the Toledo ore haulage contract to another company, presumably one of the Canadian fleets.

For quite a number of years including the last one, Toledo has been receiving ore shipments via CSL or Algoma from the Gulf of St. Lawrence Ports loading ports (Sept Isles, Port Cartier, Pointe Noire etc.)
He means that ore will continue to be shipped from those locations, up the Seaway to Toledo, but now there will be more tonnage flowing from there, rather than Marquette.

Ore will be purchased from Quebec and shipped in by another carrier to the same steel mill.

They are working on her at the port terminal right now, will go into the Drydock at the end of march, they would be in there now if it wasn't for the owner of the Nels J having and issue with their tug. I don't know where you get your info from, when Fraser has confirmed that they are going to go sail after drydocking.

Toledo float was ore taken from Marquette to Toledo over the past couple of seasons.

What does this mean... "They also lost the Toledo float. That ore will be shipped from the Seaway"?

Perhaps this poster meant to say that she will be "laid up" this year and will not sail. "Dry docked" is confusing in this case because it implies that she will get her 5-year survey / hull work and in that case she
would sail for 2013.

Munson is in need of extensive hull repairs. Her age is starting to show. She will be dry docked this year and will not sail unless CN has had a change of heart. The current season crewing is based on 8 not nine boats. They also lost the Toledo float. That ore will be shipped from the Seaway.
