Not all great lakes companies are seniority based. There are some equal time also. Depends where you live also , if your clost to a major airport then long distance can be okay if not travel can be a pain. Not all Great Lake companies are Union either. Andrie has most 2 for 1 but some equal time. Also seniority doesn't matter all crew have same time off schedule. Call the companies and check thier web sites. The oil field can be great when it's booming and when it drops off then several boats at the dock and your on the beach. The lakes are generally steadier. Good luck !

Let me be clear that I would return to the Lakes tomorrow if equal time schedules (my old school bs comment) were available. Work to live vs live to work . . . be smart with your $! Anyhow, that is another story.

Edison Chouest Offshore is Huge . . . they have a growing fleet as do Harvey Gulf, Hornbeck Offshore, and (if you want to work overseas) Tidewater and Seacor. Smaller operators like Cheramie Botruc Rentals, Aries Marine, Laborde, and C&G can be good too but you have to balance your day rate with travel expenses and whether or not the company pays your travel to/from work.

Depending on your license and experience, there is a Lot to choose from crewboats (go fast hauling smaller cargo pieces and people), OSV's (seagoing trucks that provide drilling fluids/fuel/cargo) to the drillships or rigs, utility boats (smaller OSV like boats) that mostly support production, tugs (for moving jack up rigs and non-self propelled semi sub rigs), AHTS (specialty OSV's that can tow rigs and set their anchors) that also supply exploration, and then a myriad of specialty vessels engaged in construction, ROV work, or well stimulation.

I miss the Lakes and working around home, but then again I have never seen a whale or caught tuna at work up here either!

Don't know about the gulf but for my line of work. Chefs, the gulf seems to mostly catering companies that won't pay anything . As for regular sailors I don't know
