I believe that many of the boats having this space originally had an open or exposed pilot house and that the lower space was used under certain conditions. As things changed and all pilot houses were enclosed, the "lower" pilot house was used for other purposes such as the captain's office or something else. I don't know for a fact but was told years ago that some boats carried a radio operator and that was his domain.

What was the deck below the pilot house on the Calvin used for? I have seen many ships of that era with a "room" the same size as the pilot house on that deck. Was it the capt office? Really small area.
