Yes they do with some frequency, with stone, salt and sand. In addition the sand dredge J.S. St. John runs daily, and an occasional load of biodiesel is shipped out.

The easiest time to spot ships in Erie is during Layup. For the past few years Great Lakes Fleet has wintered at least two vessels in Erie. This year Speer spent it's winter at Erie Sand and Gravel, last year Blough spent the winter there. Both years Presque Isle was at Mountfront Terminal.
In terms of seeing them there the best vantage point for Mountfront Terminal ironicly is from Presque Isle State Park. Erie Sand and Gravel is best seen from some the access road leading to Mountfront terminal, or from the driveway just before the musuem.
