Favourite Lighthouse
Re: Favourite Lighthouse
I always thought Split Rock was one of the most iconic lighthouses in the country.
Re: Favourite Lighthouse
In no specific order-
Gull Rock
14 Mile Point
Waugoshance Shoal
Manitou Island (Lake Superior)
I have something for the hard to get to and long neglected sites-
Honrable mention-
White Shoal- have a very similar lighthouse incoeperated in a tattoo, I also have a whale/thousand footer hybrid based off a mural on the Burns Harbor when I worked on her.
Peninsula Point- (my brother and my cousins and I use to ride bikes from Garth Bluff/Rapid River to this light in the summer ehy my grandmother let us do that as kids I have no idea)

Re: Favourite Lighthouse
One of my favorite Lighthouses is the Ontonagon Lighthouse in Ontonagon, MI. I give tours there on Fridays in the summer. Come check it out.
Re: Favourite Lighthouse
Tibbetts Point lighthouse in Cape Vincent is hard to beat.
It's a spectacular location overlooking where the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario meet, it's an attractive and well kept up structure, its Fresnel Lens is still installed and operational, the outbuildings like the keeper's quarters are intact and well maintained, and there's a steady flow of ship traffic.
About the only thing that detracts from it these days are the NIMBY's nearby that managed to silence its magnificent foghorn in the early 2000s. So one can no longer visit on a foggy day and enjoy that sound.

Re: Favourite Lighthouse
It's hard to beat the walk out to Big Sable Point Lighthouse north of Ludington. And the view from the tower on a summer day is something to behold.
Re: Favourite Lighthouse
Detour Reef lighthouse gets help every year from Judi Bailey and family from Drummond Island. They have a big event every year to support the light.
Re: Favourite Lighthouse
My favorite light is Detour Reef Light. I have been a volunteer keeper for many years. Being a crib light makes it very special.
Re: Favourite Lighthouse
Since I live 1/2 mile from it.... and it is the oldest working lighthouse on the great lakes... The Marblehead Lighthouse.. gets my vote.
Re: Favourite Lighthouse
I just googled Flowerpot island wow.. what a beautiful place.
Favourite Lighthouse
Alright now,
My favourites are the light station on Flower Pot Island and the one by Michipicoten on the Ontario side.
