That is exactly how the trip was executed. I was looking forward to seeing another laker pass under the lift bridge, but I guess I will have wait until next year.

I have quite a few pictures from this delivery. I will post them once I sort out the good from the bad.

Looking at the tracking map for the Algoma Transfer (see below), it looks as if it turned around in a wide area of the channel and backed its way to the dock. It is now headed back out the upper entrance. No catching it on any web cams on this trip.

The Algoma Transfer must be going to come in the upper entrance. Right now, 3 AM CDT, it's abeam of Copper Harbor.

Algoma Transfer is the vessel, at 3:00 p.m. above the Soo Locks.

the other salt boat is due here tomorrow morning, about 10am.

to answer whomever asked if they went out the upper entry, yes. they wouldn't fit under the bridge unloaded, sitting too high in the water.

Anyone happen to know when the next boat is due here? I think it's the Canadian Transport and supposed to be this week sometime. I will try to find out, and let everyone know. TIA.

They exited the upper side of the canal and proceeded around the Keweenaw. She is actually still in Marquette at the time; maybe due to rough weather?

I will be adding an album of her Houghton/Hancock visit to the public photo gallery, I will post the link when it's complete.

Seeing that the Algosoo was going to Marquette after unloading salt in Hancock, were they able to turn around and head back out the lower entrance or did they go out the upper entrance and have to go around the Keweenaw Peninsula to get to Marquette?

I was skipper of the Mapleglen in 1998 went I went through the waterway and anchored in Portage Lake to wait out a west storm, did anyone take pictures of the transit?

Nice to see a discussion of freighters going into the Portage lake area each year. When I was a wee lad there were freighters coming into the copper towns on a daily basis with coal for the mills and home heating needs. Many of the locals started their carrers aboard ships by hiring on at the local docks.

Thanks for the info Badkid03. I thought they unloaded before they got to the bridge if they came in the lower side. I was wrong.

They unload over at mattilas dock near Hancock beach. They are currently anchored out near the south entrance. I don't think they will be going back out the south entrance. They usually head out the north entry after unloading. They will be loaded coming under the bridge and unload at the dock. They are 8.4 miles from the lower entrance right now, 20:52 CDT.
They offload on the bay side of the bridge do they not? They won't be going out under the bridge until after they unload, correct?

they will not be coming in to unload tonite, they will be at anchor outside of chassell until morning. ETA 10:30am! they will be coming in under the bridge, guaranteed i will be down there looking for it.

Should be at the entrance about 22:00 tonight.

I see she is under way headed in this direction. If this is true, I would imagine the ETA is sometime this afternoon.
