I heard during Engineers day they are restoring the buildings on the east and west ends by removing the observation platforms from the roofs.
Someone also thought the new viewing platform was going to be totally enclosed with glass. I hope they do not as it is very nice the way it is.

The east and west towers are coming down after the tourist season. A friend was told by one of the corps engineers that if you knew how bad of shape they are in you wouldn't use them.Paul downriver wrote:Thanks Roger. The center platform was re-built, and both the East and West platforms were left alone? Any idea on getting info on ship ETA's?

I was pleasantly surprised by the new observation deck. It seems that it is twice as wide as the old one and with two levels. The top level does have some glass in the middle, but there is plenty of room to the left and right that is above the glass where you can get clear shots.
They also made space at each end for a couple of park benches to sit and wait for the ships to come in. All in all, it was very well done.
It also has a telephone number listed on the glass at each entrance in which you can call to get passage information. Unfortunately I did not write that down. Sorry.

The new viewing platform is open, and it's not bad. Plexiglas lower level but the upper level is mostly open. Here's a picture I took recently.

Soo Locks ETA phone number or website
I believe that the Soo Locks visitors center doesn't have a direct phone number anymore to call for ship ETA's, at least the number I have isn't in service anymore. Is there a new number, or "live" webpage that shows the ETA's to the locks? In the past it was nice to call ahead while in the area, and get up to a 3-4 hour heads-up on ship passages.
Also does anyone know if the new viewing platform are finished yet, and if they are constructed with plexiglass like the two at each end?
