A fantastic day to be on or near the river or lake! Tomorrow's forecast includes high winds and potential lakeshore flooding -- again!

I agree Paul and thanks as always Bookworm as your photos are such a daylight to see especially when the weather at times is dull, drab, dark and dreary. After a two week lay off for me, it seemed and felt great being back up at the river on a Saturday. I thought I was going to have a slow day at first with only three but then the afternoon traffic picked up and got busy. Lucky for me I saw 6 boats with two 1,000 footers and not sure who and what you saw? I got the James R. Barker along with the Great Republic, tanker Algonorth, Tecumseh and later during the evening the American Spirit and salty Pia. Had great and excellent light on the Algonorth, Tecumseh, American Spirit and the Pia. Keep up the great job on your photos Bookworm and thanks for posting them here.

Plenty of traffic, in both directions, in the dark hours, not so much in daylight. Someone's favorite has to be among these photos.

Not for a few years. The cold, blustery and icy weather to come is the most challenging.

Today was a perfect day to go along Lake Huron, visiting lighthouses, roadside parks, and campgrounds I remembered from when I would come up from Ohio.
Well, not all was as I had experienced back then. High water, strong wind storms and time rendered things greatly changed -- especially where long flights of steps leading down to sandy beaches were gone as well as the beaches, but it was still a great adventure!

Thanks. Actually, I nearly missed it. Caught American Courage on the river and stopped to get Algoma Compass on my way home. It's 25 steps down from the parking lot to the best view of the aggregates dock. After taking a series of photos of Compass, I climbed up the steps and started collecting small pine cones. I was about to head home when I realized Courage had slowed and was moving toward the aggregates dock. It was an incredible realization! So, back down the steps...take a series of Courage coming in... and back up the steps for that final shot. My exercise for the day! Oh, we're not ready for snow yet. Still have to get flower and vegetable gardens ready for winter.

Big time surprise when I was at the river this morning. Never have I seen two ships scheduled at Bluewater Aggregates (Marysville) at the same time, especially arriving within thirty minutes of each other.
Compass arrived from Port Weller and Courage from Detroit. Was Compass delivering road salt and Courage stone?

Major changes in the weather are pushing me to focus more on getting my flower and vegetable garden(s) ready for winter and not so much on river traffic. But it was nice to take time out for one tug and two ships.

Busy day on the river...and a busy night ahead for me so will be brief in the comments. First 4 are from late yesterday afternoon.
Saw at least 5 semi trailers, with "WIDE LOAD" designations, headed toward Marine City on M-29 this afternoon.

While I have a few favorites of my own, each footer, freighter, tug, saltie, and tanker is someone's favorite -- usually because a family member or a friend is a crew member. It is with them (and you who follow this thread) in mind, that I photograph and post the pictures. Enjoy!

Sometimes, using AIS, I schedule my times at the river, but other times I just happen to be at the right place at the time. I love it!! Here are two days worth of "shooting ships."

Listening to the sounds of ships as they pass is as fascinating to me as watching them. Each has a different engine sound. Some purr softly, some have a rhythmic beat, and some are almost silent. The tone and volume of their horns vary, too, but a salute is a delight regardless.

A welcome break in the weather...maybe I can mow the high ground (front lawn) but the rest of my yard is still very swampy -- and rain is a possibility overnight!
