Draining the Welland Canal

The water mainly runs out to Lake Ontario and is replenished by Lake Erie in March or April. Don't forget that 326 feet of elevation separates the two Lakes which makes drainage much easier.

Locks 1-7 have reservoirs so I would guess that’s where the water goes. From Lock 7 to Lake Erie does not get drained.

After the close of the Canal this week, segments have been drained to enable winter repairs/updates to begin. Where does the drained water go, and where do they get water from, to refill it in March? Thanks in advance
