okay where are these pictures, the only ones ive found which happen to be mine of the Katmai Bay.haven't seen any others from the canal and i check the news photos daily .

Pardon me, my misunderstanding. I was referring to the passage of the Algosoo for salt delivery to Hancock, Mich. Saturday October 22, shown in the News Photo Gallery, October 23, 2011 and pictures of the Algoma Transfer in Hancock, Mich. on Thursday October 27, unloading 10,000 tons of road salt, shown in the News Photo Gallery October 30, 2011.

Yes, both transits were photographed, uploaded, and displayed in the News Photo Gallery, this site, on or close to the reported dates.

I've checked all the News Photo galleries from mid-November through mid-December and am coming up empty. Perhaps they were submitted but not published?

The only image of the PM 41 I found was one night view of loading in Marinette / Menominee.

The ATB Undaunted/PM41 transited the canal westbound on 11/23 and eastbound on 11/26 at night.

Did anyone happen to get photos of either transit? I would be very interested in seeing those if possible.

To the person who posted about the Maritime Academy boat.I actually have been on there! They do dock here right in Houghton near the bridge every May or June for a day or 2. I have pic of the boat, plus pics I took on the tour about 5-6 years ago.by chance you probably were on that boat then.

Occasionally a ship will go through the canal due to weather as well but that is becoming a few and far between practice. I went to MTU from 2001 to 2006 and saw only a handful of ships the whole time I was there. After graduating I went on to attend Great Lakes Maritime Academy. I can tell you that almost every Spring (usually May or June) the training ship from GLMA will transit the keweenaw and dock overnight in Houghton. Its a nice stop for the cadets as the dock is right in town! If you check out Great Lakes Maritime Academies website during that time they will post a schedule of when they will be in town.

I myself attend Michigan Tech, and as was stated we get at least one sometimes two salt deliveries a year. Here are my pictures from the two deliveries this year:

Sometimes vessels will take shelter in the portage, but I have not seen any large vessels do this recently - Just a couple cutters and a research vessel.

The shipping canal isn't used much anymore as a lot of the boats can't fit under the lift bridge. When we do get boats that come through the canal, few actually go the full length. Mostly they come in due to weather or when we get road salt. The salt is unloaded at Hancock, MI. Usually the smaller boats will go through the canal (less than 1000 feet) and can fit under the bridge. But most of them that do come here come in from the North Entry and back in, they turn around near High Point Road and back in the rest of the way. After unloading they head back out the same way they came in. The one boat this year did come in the South Entry and when they unloaded went out the North Entry. If you want to know more, a good person to ask is Kraig Funkey ...he operated the Keweenaw Star here for a number of years and is also a Captain on the Mesabi Miner. He's navigated the canal several times, can tell you why it's not used much anymore.

I have tons of pictures of the boats that have been here, some have been on this site also under news photos. Currently the Arthur M Anderson and American Century are anchored in Beta Grise Bay. Lee A Tregurtha remians docked in Marquette's Upper Harbor.

They do still use it. They deliver salt to Hancock, across the canal and on the other side of the lift bridge from MTU, by boat, every fall.
