Here is the James Norris as I remember her, without all that stuff on deck, taken at Lock 3 on the Welland in May 1966.

Fantastic photo, right near the end of her career. Thanks for sharing this with us.

That's tough to look at. Seems too early for the boneyard. But she served her time well for ULS. lt has to end sometime or another. 3/2 to her and the men that sailed her.

Sorry no photo but the boom is gone as well as the top flight of the pilot house. She has been moved to the south scrapping berth recently site of the last of Canadian Leader and the rear cabins are starting to disappear. It's a pretty sad sight already for a distinguished, classic vessel.

Not usually, but considering the condition the Norris was in and now how much parts salvage is taking place Algoma must have thought there was a real threat of her being resold.

The Maritime Administration had the steering gear destroyed on the maritimer trade-ins, so that they could not be re-activated, before they went for scapping at Stelco, after WWII. So there is precedent.

Wow they do that? I've never heard of that happening before. Is this customary for scrapped lakers?

It's already been ruined, sand was run through it when she arrived at the yard to prevent re-activation.

I wonder if anybody will try to save her Skinner steam engine?

Seems like a smart move if true for Lower Lakes to buy the boom (Don't see what use the rest of it would have). It's relatively young and seems like it could be an ideal replacement in an emergency for several of their vessels (Boom collapses aren't terribly uncommon).

Doesn't seem like it would be for the CTC 1. Construction of a boom is one of the more economical things they'd be facing if they were to modernize and put her into service. Don't know why they'd pinch their pennies there if they were going to spend all that money. The main advantage of this old boom would be a quick repair turnaround to get an active ship back into service quickly.

Don't see what Algoma would want with it. They're surely not going to mount it on one of their new vessels. And if it was an appropriate replacement for the booms of several of their vessels that they visualize keeping well into the future, why didn't they remove it for a spare before selling her for scrap instead of purchasing it back after the fact?

It would seem odd to me that Algoma would possibly take a boom from the Norris to put on one of their newer ships when they can build a boom anyway for the newer ships at the yards in China.

Is the boom for the CTC 1 perhaps?

Have heard multiple rumours that LLT bought the boom, belt, pulleys, and asorted unloading gear off the Norris to install on one of their boats. I also heard of the possiblility that Algoma is taking the boom to install it on one of their new vessels.

Anyone have any facts?

Here is a picture I took of the James Norris as she passed under the Blue Water Bridge on December 3, 2011, while on her last voyage down the St. Clair River.

She was moved to W.17 to allow crane access to remove her boom. Sadly, no reprieve!
