Great Lakes Fleet Page Vessel Feature -- Edward L. Ryerson,
By George Wharton;
The Edward L. Ryerson has had no recordable incidents of any serious nature throughout her tenure on the Great Lakes. The Ryerson did, however, have difficulty before entering service when it was determined after her launch that the new bulk carrier was, in fact landlocked in the Manitowoc River. Fifty feet (15.24m) of Manitowoc's east dock had to excavated to allow the Ryerson to make the turn and pass through the railway bridge.

Re: Edward L Ryerson
This is the Ryerson leaving the shipyard after completion at Manitowoc, WI. If I'm not mistaken, the year is 1960. The Ryerson was actually too long to make the turn at a bend in the Manitowoc river, and a portion of the bank was cut into to allow just enough room. Today, the same location is known as Ryerson Bend . Made for a great photo, but also demonstrated the sad reality that Manitowoc Shipbuilding would not be able to construct anything larger, putting it out of the running for the larger builds in the future. The Ryerson is a proud and attractive symbol of a once-bustling ship building industry in the city.

They had to cut a portion of the bank away to allow the ELR to leave the shipyard after being constructed.
