That is exactly what it sounds like. Up around Port Clinton and Sandusky, to pick a spot, the roads were sometimes shut down because they were so slippery until the bulldozers could clear them.

We have the same problem with Midges on the Mather, and we are starting to see Canadian Soldiers there also.

That slippery part doesn't sound good at all! Does that mean what it sounds like?

I believe these are what we knew as Mayflies. We used to be covered by them on Lake Erie. There would immense numbers attracted by the decklights. So many accumulated that we used the deck lines to wash them over the side. The numbers were unbelievable. Another popular name was Canadian soldiers. I have no idea how that originated. They didn't bite or do anything annoying other than the fact that they arrived - and they were slippery!

What are fish flies?
Fish flies are common in late spring around the lakes. They hatch and go just about everywhere en masse near the lakes area. A terrible and messy nuisance, but something very yummy for fish to munch on, much to the disappointment of many fishermen.

To clean the bridges? Do you mean to clean off the flies?

Would that fish fly be the same as may flies on the rivers? They are bad here in Mn. and some times they use snow plows to clean the bridges.

I've been out here on the John G. Munson for 12 days now. Enjoying my trip! Been to Duluth, Two Harbors, Locks, Detroit, Sandusky, Conneaut, Astabula, just to name a few. Weather has been fairly good. Fish flies have been awful! Will be out here 3-4 more days. Been waving and been waved at. Enjoying my trip!
