Are you sure it's the Ryerson. The Edward L. Ryerson? How did she get to Duluth? The last I heard (yesterday, March 13th), she was still laid-up at Sturgeon Bay, with no signs of activity.

The blast furnace trim they are referring to would be crushed raw taconite than is high in silicon content and in the steel making process it is added to the blast furnace where they make the iron to increase the amount of slag that they take off. This ore is found in the Mesanabi and Duluth iron ranges. Hope that this helps you out.

They're loading furnace ballast. Maybe someone else can explain what it's used for.
